Nutritional value of suckler beef from temperate pasture systems

چکیده

The role of beef in human diets has been questioned over the last few decades, due largely to its typically high mass-based carbon footprint. However, recent advancements sustainability literature challenge this paradigm based on new theory that climate impacts food commodities should be measured relative their overall nutritional value rather than nominal mass. This shift opened a opportunity for global industry, and especially pasture-based systems can avoid food-feed competition land other resources, as is nutritionally dense food. Nonetheless, sector’s true capability supply wide range nutrients humans, consistently across multiple under weather patterns, not well-documented. Using whole-system datasets from North Wyke Farm Platform South West England, we investigated produced three most common pasture temperate regions: permanent (PP), grass white clover (GWC) short-term monoculture ley (MG). Beef these was analysed key (fatty acids, minerals vitamin E) production cycles (2015–2017) determine potential differences between systems. Fatty acid, mineral E profiles silage fed each group were also assessed, with subtle pastures reported. For beef, observed systems, GWC having higher omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentrations PP MG. quality found comparable all suggesting classified single commodity future assessments, regardless specific sward types. A 100 g serving source (>20% recommended daily intake: RDI) protein, monounsaturated saturated vitamins – B2, B3, B12 Fe, P, Zn; good (10–19% B6 K; complementary (5–9% omega-3 PUFA, B9 Cu, Mg, Se. item used defining environmental cost (e.g. footprint) make fair comparisons different groups protein sources). Here, showed had nutrient indexed footprint 0.19 0.23 Kg CO2-eq/1% RDI nutrients.

Comparison of organoleptic quality and composition of beef from suckler bulls from different production systems.

Bull beef production is traditionally based on high concentrate rations fed indoors. Inclusion of grazed grass, which is generally a cheaper feed, would decrease the cost of bull beef production, but may affect beef quality. Accordingly, the organoleptic quality and composition of beef from continental-sired suckler bulls (n=126) assigned to either ad libitum concentrates to slaughter (C), gras...

Suckler beef systems – assessing steps to improve profitability

Introduction Ireland is the fifth largest net exporter of beef in the world, exporting 90% of the total 520,000 tonnes of carcass weight produced in 2014, valued at just under €2.1 billion. A further 210,000 cattle, worth €162 m, were exported live. Beef production is the most ubiquitous farm enterprise activity in Ireland with the beef sector one of the main contributors to the Irish agri-food...

Maxillary osteosarcoma in a beef suckler cow

A ten-year-old beef suckler cow was referred to the Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health & Food Safety of the University of Glasgow, because of facial swelling in the region of the right maxilla. The facial swelling was first noticed three months earlier and was caused by a slow growing oral mass which contained displaced, loosely embedded teeth. The radiographic, laboratory and clinico...

Cryptosporidium infections in suckler herd beef calves

A study was carried out to investigate how common Cryptosporidium infections are in beef calves in Swedish suckler herds and to explore which species and subtypes that occur. We further aimed at identifying factors associated with shedding of Cryptosporidium oocysts in this type of calf management. The study was conducted in two regions in Sweden and included 30 herds. Faecal samples were colle...

Uptake of Sexed Semen by Uk Suckler Beef Producers

Dairy farmers have been able to use sexed semen from dairy breeds to pre-determine the sex of calves since 2000, sexed semen from beef bulls is not currently commercially available, but is expected within 2 years. A survey of a stratified random sample of suckler cow farmers is used to identify the potential uptake of sexed semen when it becomes available using a logistic limited dependent vari...
